Acoustic surfaces are not noticed for their shape but for their gap. If the spacing between two slats varies by a millimetre, it is visible from ten metres. The relevant tolerance here is not the radius, it is the gap.
Parts we make for acoustic surfaces
Slats and battens
Straight or bent slats for wall and ceiling surfaces, 4 to 18 cm section, 0.8 to 4 cm thick, drilled for concealed carriers on request. Bent wood slats
Curved surfaces
Cylindrical or free-form bent slat carriers for conference rooms, restaurants and lobbies. Bent wood arch components
Fascias in front of absorber cores
Curved panels that conceal an absorber core without closing the surface. Bent wood panels
Gap, curve and installation
We hold gaps to ±0.3 mm and the curve against a template to ±0.5 mm. That is tighter than furniture work, because acoustic surfaces are usually seen from a distance and in grazing light — where any irregularity becomes a visible wave.
The gap is also the acoustic element: together with perforation and cavity it determines how much sound the surface absorbs. That design belongs to the acoustic plan — we produce the geometry, agree the slat pitch with the planner, and do not promise values that depend on the room.
Delivered ready to install: drilled, deburred and labelled per wall section. Curved surfaces are segmented so joints fall on the carrier axes and not in the visible face.
Tooling, MOQ and lead time
Tooling is built in-house in 7 to 15 days from drawing and archived for the project. For acoustic surfaces the minimum is rarely critical because slats are needed in large numbers; for curved carriers it follows the tooling.
Production runs 15 to 30 days, FOB Foshan or Shenzhen. Slats are bundled and numbered by wall section so nothing has to be sorted on site. Details under MOQ, lead time and shipping.
Acoustic surfaces are usually planned in grazing light, so the finish is part of the function: evenly sanded to 120 grit and open-pore oiled. High gloss doubles every deviation in slat pitch, because the reflection emphasises the edge.
Frequent questions
What gap tolerance is possible on acoustic slats?
±0.3 mm across the whole surface. Tighter than normal furniture work, because acoustic surfaces are viewed in grazing light and from a distance.
How is a curved acoustic surface installed?
We deliver drilled, deburred and segmented by carrier axis, labelled per wall section. Fixing is on site-supplied or included carriers.
Does the wood surface alone determine acoustics?
No. Absorption comes from gap, perforation, cavity and room geometry. That design belongs to the acoustic plan; we supply the geometry and agree the pitch.
Terms: bend radius, springback and case-hardening are explained in the bent wood glossary. Send a drawing with radius and section and we confirm feasibility, tooling and lead time within 24 hours via the contact page.
