Bent Plywood FAQ: Curves, Grades & Sourcing

Bent plywood is the workhorse of curved furniture parts: a cross-laminated veneer core bends across the grain without the splitting risk of solid wood, and holds a tighter, more consistent curve. These answers cover construction, bend radius, finishing and how to specify a curved plywood part for production.

Questions and answers

What is the minimum bend radius for bent plywood?

For laminated plywood the practical bend radius is roughly 5 to 10 times the panel thickness, which is 5 to 20 times tighter than solid wood of the same section. A 10mm birch panel can typically be formed to a 50 to 100mm inside radius; below that you need thicker veneers or more frequent pressing.

Which core material should I choose for bent plywood?

Birch gives the cleanest bend and a pale finish, poppler (aspen) is easier to form and lighter, and birch-plywood is common for structural chair shells. We supply birch-core, poplar-core and mixed-core panels, with FSC or PEFC chain-of-custody material on request.

How many plies should a curved panel have?

Fewer plies allow a tighter radius; more plies give a smoother continuous curve and better screw-holding. Furniture chair shells are commonly 9 to 15 ply, while lighting and decorative panels use 5 to 9 ply. We can advise the lay-up for your radius and load.

Steam bending or press-curving – which is better for plywood?

Press-curving in a heated mould is faster, more repeatable and dimensionally stable, and it is our default for plywood. Steam bending suits thicker panels and very large radii. Most production orders are pressed; steam is used where the drawing calls for it.

What glue is used and is it compliant?

We use PU and PVA adhesives that meet CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI for indoor air quality, with formaldehyde-emission classes available on request. All laminated panels are fully cured and press-dimmed before machining.

How accurate are the finished curved panels?

We hold dimensional tolerance of ±0.5mm on machined features after drying. Curvature is checked on a template at the press and again after conditioning, so parts fit consistently across a production run.

Can you supply curved plywood parts with CNC-machined features?

Yes. We CNC-machine drilling, routing and pocket features after forming, so you receive ready-to-assemble components with consistent hole positions and reference faces for jigs.
