Solid bent wood keeps the grain continuous through the curve, which is why it is chosen where appearance and structural strength both matter. These answers cover species selection, plasticisation, bend radius, drying and springback for solid bent components.

Questions and answers
Which wood species is best for steam bending?
Ash is the classic bending wood: it plasticises readily, holds a curve well and is abundant. Beech is denser at 720 kg/m³ and takes a tighter radius. Birch bends cleanly but is more prone to tearing if over-steamed. Walnut and zebrawood are used where a darker decorative face is wanted.
What moisture content is required for steam bending?
Fibre plasticisation happens when timber is brought to roughly 20–25% moisture content, which is why green or pre-conditioned stock is used. Below about 15% the fibres resist bending and will crack; well above 25% the timber tears.
How long does a part need to be steamed?
As a working rule, about 15 minutes per centimetre of thickness. A 20mm slat needs roughly 5 hours, a 50mm section closer to 12. We record steaming time per batch so repeat orders reproduce the same result.
What is the smallest radius I can bend in solid wood?
With a steel strap, the practical limit is about 1:2 of the thickness, the typical commercial ratio is around 1:5, and 1:10 is comfortable for most furniture parts. Tighter radii than1:5 normally need thicker stock or a laminated construction instead.
How much does bent wood spring back after forming?
Dry wood formed to a given radius will spring back as it reabsorbs moisture. Dried to below 12% moisture before forming, recovery is typically 1–4%; parts that are wetter when bent can move 3–8% or more, which is why we dry first.
Do I need to steam bend or is press-curving enough for solid wood?
Press-curving a thinner solid section is faster and more repeatable and is our default for slats and panels under about 20mm. Thicker solid sections and tight radii need steam bending. We recommend the process per part during quotation.
What happens to the parts in service as humidity changes?
Solid bent wood moves across the grain as humidity changes, so we dry to below 12% and specify the service environment. For parts in variable humidity, a laminated plywood construction is dimensionally more stable and is worth considering.
