Why Choose Our Curved Ash Slat?
📦 Shipping Note
What this size suits
At 54.5 x 13 x 3.3 cm, this is a wide-format seat slat: the deeper section and generous width suit lounge and occasional seating where the seat board carries a sitter’s weight across a broad span. The shallow curve follows a lounge seat profile, and the section is thick enough to take fixing points for screwed or slotted attachment without splitting at the ends.

Applications
- Lounge and occasional seating — wide seat boards carrying load across a broad span.
- Dining chair seats — where a deeper section is specified for durability.
- Garden and outdoor seating — with weather-resistant finishes on oak, larch or acacia.
- Replacement programmes — matched to originals for classic and contract seating refresh.
Why bend a slat
A curved slat cut from solid stock has short grain at the shoulders — the exact points where the curve is tightest and the load is highest. A steam-bent slat carries the grain around the curve, so it flexes with the chair instead of cracking at the shoulder. For seat boards that carry weight season after season, that difference decides whether the chair is still serviceable in ten years.
Ordering
Standard sizes ship from repeated production, so re-orders move quickly; custom dimensions follow the normal path of quotation, sample, production. Slats are banded and cartoned in bundles that support the curve. Send your specification through our contact page for a quotation within 24 hours. See also our bent wood slats page.
How this size fits the ash range
The ash slats run from 47.5 cm to 210 cm and from 2.2 to 4 cm in section. This 54.5 x 13 x 3.3 cm size is the compact wide one: shorter than the 58.2 cm all-rounder but wider, which changes its job. Where the all-rounder is a general dining slat, this is a lounge and occasional seating board — the extra width gives a broader seat surface, and the 3.3 cm section carries a sitter across the compact span. It is also the most common replacement size for mid-century lounge chairs, whose seat boards were cut wide rather than long.
For longer ash spans see the 71.5 cm and 115 cm slats; for the widest board see the 18.2 cm wide-format piece. This is the compact wide seat.
Restoration and replacement notes
This is one of the sizes restoration workshops order most, because mid-century lounge chairs were built with seat boards cut wide rather than long — and the originals are now worn out. The usual scope is: match the original curve and section from a sample, supply in the original species (or a documented substitute where the original species is unavailable), and finish to match the existing frame so the replacement board does not announce itself.
Because this is a standard size produced repeatedly, most restoration orders need no new tooling — the form exists and the process is proven, which keeps both the cost and the lead time down. Where the original profile is unusual, a single form is built and kept on file, so a second order for the same chair model years later produces the same part.
