Bent Wood Edge Bands: Custom Steam-Bent Supply
Curved edge banding and lipping in ash, beech, walnut and birch plywood, bent to match panel and radius specifications for furniture and door makers. Supplied to length, dried below 12% moisture.
Our bent wood edge bands edge tables, counters and casework in solid hardwood — made to your drawing in two- or three-part constructions so round and oval tops can be wrapped without a visible joint.
Edge bands we manufacture
- Table edge bands — solid wood edging for round, oval and shaped tops.
- Counter and bar bands — durable edging for reception counters, bars and hospitality fit-outs.
- Casework bands — curved edging for cabinets, chests and architectural casework.

Why bend the edge?
A glued-up band shows end grain at every joint and will eventually show a hairline crack along the glue line, especially on wide tops in dry interiors. A steam-bent band keeps the grain running around the curve — one continuous piece of wood, no end grain, no crack line, and a finish that stays smooth for the life of the piece.
The engineering of an edge band
A table edge does two jobs: it protects the substrate from knocks and moisture, and it gives the top a solid-wood sightline. Cut that edge into segments and you get end grain at every joint — and end grain is where a finish cracks first. Under the seasonal movement of a heated interior (equilibrium moisture content typically sits between 6% and 12%), each glue line in a segmented band works independently, and the finish eventually opens along it.
A steam-bent band keeps the grain running around the full curve. There is no end grain in the visible face and no glue line to crack, so the edge stays smooth for the life of the piece. The physics is the same as for a chair back: continuous grain around a curve carries movement as elasticity, while a joint carries it as stress.
Construction: how a full circle is edged
No single bend wraps a full circumference without exceeding what the wood can stretch, so round and oval tops are edged in multi-part constructions:
- Two-part construction — each piece covers 180° of arc; the two joints sit opposite each other.
- Three-part construction — each piece covers 120°; three joints evenly spaced.
- Four-part construction — each piece covers 90°, for large diameters where a 120° piece would need too wide a blank.
Joints are placed where they will be least visible — typically toward the back or at the legs — and the number of parts is agreed on the drawing before tooling.
Sizing the band to your top
| Top thickness | Typical band section | Notes |
| 19–25 mm | 20–30 mm wide | Standard dining and desk tops |
| 25–38 mm | 30–45 mm wide | Solid tops, counters |
| 38–50 mm | 45–60 mm wide | Bars, reception counters, thick architectural tops |
The band is machined after bending to your exact section, with the underside relief and any shrinkage allowance your substrate needs. Send the top profile and thickness and we will confirm the band section and the number of parts for the diameter.
Species and finish
Ash, beech, birch, walnut and oak are all supplied, raw or pre-finished. For tops that will be refinished in place, we supply raw bands sanded to 180 grit; for production programmes, oiled, stained or lacquered bands are delivered ready to glue on.
Standard specifications
| Construction | Solid steam-bent; two-, three- or four-part for full circumference |
| Materials | White ash, beech, birch, black walnut, oak |
| Arc per part | 90°, 120° or 180° depending on diameter and visibility of joints |
| Section | To your top profile; typically 20–60 mm wide |
| Machining | Underside relief and shrinkage allowance to spec; CNC accuracy ±0.5 mm |
| Finishes | Raw (sanded to 180 grit), oiled, stained or lacquered |

Common applications
- Dining and conference tables — round and oval tops edged in ash, oak or walnut to match or contrast the top.
- Reception counters and bars — thicker bands (45–60 mm) on high-traffic edges, often in durable species.
- Casework and cabinets — curved edging on chests, cabinets and architectural casework.
- Restoration — replacement bands matched to original profiles on tables being rebuilt.
Ordering
Send the top profile, thickness and diameter, plus the number of parts you want for the circumference. We confirm the band section and joint placement, quote within 24 hours, and supply samples in 7–15 days. Raw bands are sanded ready for your own finishing; finished bands arrive ready to glue on.
Common issues and how they are prevented
- Cracking along the glue line — the classic segmented-band failure, driven by seasonal movement across the joint. A bent band removes the joint from the visible face entirely.
- End grain showing at the corners — a finish and appearance problem as much as a structural one; continuous grain avoids it.
- Band pulling away from the substrate — usually a movement problem, not a bonding problem: the substrate and band must be at compatible moisture content, and the band needs the shrinkage allowance machined in.
- Springback after installation — bent bands are dried in the form before machining; where a curve is unusually tight we will recommend lamination, which holds 1–3% springback instead of 3–8%.
Restoration work
Replacement bands are quoted from the original table — send the top profile, thickness and a photo of the edge. Where the original used a segmented construction we will recommend a single bent band, so the joint that cracked does not return.
Frequently asked questions
What are bent wood edge bands used for?
They wrap the edge of tables, counters and casework in solid wood — a smooth, durable edge that matches or contrasts the top, and protects the substrate from knocks and moisture.
Can you supply bands for round and oval tables?
Yes. We supply two-part and three-part constructions that cover 90° or 120° of arc, so any round or oval table can be edged without a visible joint at the same point.
What thicknesses and widths do you make?
Dimensions are made to your drawing; send the table profile and top thickness and we will confirm the band section that suits it.
Do you supply finished or raw bands?
Either — raw bands for your own machining and finishing, or sanded, oiled, stained or lacquered bands ready to glue on.
